Welcome to Practice Doula!

ree

We're pushing and making good progress! Today, for International Day of the Midwife, we're launching the Practice Doula website and podcast. It's been a labor of love. I recorded our first podcast episode yesterday (be gentle with me!), so I feel like I'm starting to get my footing here. I thought it would be good to share my hopes and dreams for Practice Doula.

My hope is that Practice Doula's members-only area will grow into a huge source of support and inspiration for midwives, students, and advocates. Memberships are free, and I believe the members-only area's format will feel familiar, especially for anyone who has used Facebook. The message boards will largely be unmoderated, so we will rely on everyone playing nicely. When things get unruly or ugly between members, we'll deal with it, but I hope it will organically grow into a positive space where people feel free to share. Members can add their own groups, I believe, so if you want to add a group, go for it!

I get a lot of requests for help from people who are thinking about which path they should take in their midwifery career. People often feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of "stuff" that needs to be done to reach their career goals. We want to care for people and provide midwifery model care, which should be enough, but we all need to deal with the realities of practice in the 21st century. Whether you are a student and can't decide which pathway to take to become a midwife, need to set up your practice, want to optimize your Quickbooks setup, or want to get your birth center accredited, I can meet with you to assess your needs and come up with a plan of action.

After 15 years of practice, I've accumulated a lot of informed choice documents and educational materials that have helped me care for people in a way that feels comprehensive and evidence-based. I have created a birth center policies and procedures manual that helped me run two accredited birth centers efficiently. If you don't see what you need on the website, just ask me for it. I probably either already have what you need or can pull it together for you quickly.

I hope you enjoy Practice Doula. Here's our first podcast. Like and subscribe!
